Eat well, play better golf, says top sports dietitian

Eat and drink your way to better golf. That’s the theme of a new series of monthly articles commissioned by ELGA from leading sports dietitian Jane Griffin.
The series has just been launched and the articles will be published on the websites of both ELGA and the English Golf Union. They explain how all golfers – from beginners to elite players – can improve performance by paying attention to nutrition.
The first nutrition bulletin deals with basics - the foundations of a good, daily diet – while future topics will be specifically golf related.
Jane will deal with such issues as:
• Playing and competing in a hot climate
• Coping with Christmas
• Eating for stamina
• Coping with awkward tee times
• Hydration
• Sports drinks
• Alcohol
“I really do think every golfer will benefit from this information,” said Jane. “A lot of people don’t make the link between performance and nutrition.
“I have worked in the sports area for many years and have yet to meet someone to whom I couldn’t suggest changes to benefit performance.”
Jane has specialised in sports nutrition and dietetics for over 20 years and already works with ELGA to advise the country’s promising girls players on their diet.
She was consultant nutritionist to the British Olympic Association from 1990-2001 and is currently the sports dietitian to London Irish RFC, the London Irish, London Wasps and NEC Harlequins England Rugby Academies, and the Rugby Football League. She has written extensively for a wide range of sports magazines, women’s magazines and national newspapers and is currently working on her third book.
